Blog Post #3: How These Values of Free Expression Work in Today's Society

 

The First Amendment stands as the core concept that the founding fathers believed in and remains at the forefront of constitutional protections. As I researched the Eight Values of Free Expression, 3 terms stood out: First, the Marketplace of Ideas acts as a balancing measure to ensure the truth; secondly, Stable Change, venting allows people to speak out in times of need, especially for those who feel alienated. Lastly, Individual Self-Fulfillment allows people to express their identities uniquely.

In my findings, these 3 terms stand out from the rest due to their importance in today’s world. Whether you’re on social media or in a heated debate, these Values of Free Expression are applicable. In my opinion, having the ability to speak freely allows people to feel heard. Acting on those given freedoms allows them to be seen.

I resonate with the Marketplace of ideas. This theory applies to forms of communication, such as social media and other speech-oriented platforms. Without lies, truths do not hold any weight. In my opinion, Ideas will cease to improve, and this plays an instrumental role in the evolution of truthful speech. Another way of seeing this is that if you have no contrasting statements to compare, how will one understand the validity and importance of a given sentence? A key example of this concept is social media and the conversations that go on within a given platform. Although there will be people who continue to add on and claim other misinformation as facts, the truth will still prevail. That's the beauty of freedom of speech, differing opinions to clash and mix, but just like oil in water, the truth will rise to the top. 

Next up, I relate to the Stable Change theory. This is a form of venting that allows people who feel alienated to express their emotions. When people feel the need to express their frustration, having a safe platform is very important. Imagine Times Square in New York City, an epicenter of creative expression. It is a welcoming place for differing ideas. At the same time, some may see Times Square as a negative and overcrowded, while others use it as a canvas to shine a light on their unknown talents. Now imagine Times Square as a corporate, non-enthusiastic crossroad between buildings; it would seem dull and almost depressing. This is just a point to showcase the positives of Stable Change. Without suffering, there will be no want for change.

Lastly, Individual Self-Fulfillment. This is the foundation of personality. Free speech is just as important for identity as opinion is. Identifying the characteristics of a given person is key to understanding basic human dignity. In countries where your voice doesn't matter, you are treated like a number or part of a system. This will hinder personal growth, not kinder spirits. This is why freedom of speech is important to human autonomy. Giving a person the chance to make their own informed decisions is crucial to instilling freedom as a given, and not just a privilege.
