BLOG POST #5: HOW TO RETHINK ONLINE PRIVACY: THE PERCEPTION OF YOUR DIGITAL TRACE

During the TED Talk videos, I carefully reviewed my online usage and compared it to the ways that these people informed us about how to use the internet. I realized that most of my decisions while online contribute to the problem that they brought up. The term digital tattoos is a great way to describe the digital traces that we leave behind after every post, comment, and like. While I would like to describe myself as careful, my online past may allude to something more immature. At the time, being a 12-year-old on an Instagram account is bound to cause some issues. Especially since I’ve used the same account to this day, it may look bad for my future endeavors.  Although I am strictly against government overreach, I believe possible ways the government can encourage safe behavior include: warning younger people (under 14-15 years old) about the risks of having social media, posting private information online, and engaging in controversy.
